About NVTC

The Northern Virginia Training Center first opened its doors in April, 1973 as one of five residential training centers in the Commonwealth to serve people with intellectual and related disabilities. Since its inception, the Northern Virginia Training Center has been committed to improving the lives of people affected by intellectual disabilities.

On January 26, 2012, the Governor announced that a settlement agreement had been reached with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and he also announced that four of Virginia’s five training centers would be scheduled to close by 2020. A timeline has been developed and the Northern Virginia Training Center is scheduled for closure in June of 2015. This time will allow for the successful transition of individuals to their new homes in the community. You will be able to find more information about the settlement agreement and transition plans on the DBHDS Web Site at www.dbhds.virginia.gov/settlement.htm. This site will be updated periodically as new information becomes available.

The Northern Virginia Training Center focuses on the individual people who currently live at the facility and who will soon be moving into our communities. The Center is in partnership with the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, and Community Services Boards to successfully integrate people into their communities. The primary goal for each person served is enhanced quality of life. We are committed to providing all of our services to reflect person and family driven options allowing choices and supports that enable individuals to live inclusive and empowered lives in their communities.

We take pride in our long and successful history of innovative and effective program development in the areas of Medical, Dental and Nursing Services, Physical Therapy, Rehabilitative Engineering, Occupational Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, Speech and Language Services, Social Work Services, Psychology Services, and Vocational & Day Activity Services, as well as the dedication of all of our staff in every department throughout the Center—Administration & Fiscal Services, Buildings & Grounds, Food & Nutrition Services, Human Resources, Procurement, Compliance, Security, Residential, Training, Volunteer Services, Health Information Management & our good friends in the Reimbursement & Advocacy Divisions.

The Northern Virginia Training Center believes all people must have the opportunity to live, learn, work, play and retire in communities of their choice, and we are confident that through 40 years of providing quality services, a rich and full life may be achieved for each individual as they transition into their new homes in the community.
